Treatment Diary: November 26 - December 12

November 26 - In all the *cat* Cansema cases, it seems that people reported initially that the cancers were being reduced or changing color, but there are few follow-ups after saying that the cancer was actually cured/put into remission, and if so, for how long. I hope I don't come across as pessimistic, but rather objective. I made up a chart of all the cats from the yahoo groups and the altcancer website, but am waiting for permission from the various cat owners to post it. So far out of nine cats, only one 'in remission' since 1999 with a tumor that is still present, but not growing, with a cat that isn't getting any further treatement as he is refusing it. I only hope Hector's results will be that good.

November 28 - Since this Thursday is Thanksgiving, we don't go see the vet, but instead are waiting two weeks between treatments (have an appointment for December 5th.

December 2 - We don't quite make it! Despite the 2nd, larger e-collar, Hector manages to get his determined teeth around the edge of the plastic collar and grab the tip of his bandaged foot. Pulls it off in the middle of the night, while sitting on my head. Bleeds all over me, my pillow, the bed, the walls... wonderful way to wake up, terrified he is going to die from blood loss and covered with it! Rush him to the regular vet, who bandages him, says he does not look anemic at all, and gives him the biggest e-collar ever used on a cat. It practically drags on the floor when he walks! Hector is NOT happy, but consoled with chicken baby food. He devours the entire jar and meows and rubs my legs for more!

The good part about him getting the bandage off is I managed to get some photos of the area finally. See below. The tape used to hold the bandage on pretty much stripped the area above the tumor of hair, that's why it looks like that.

(Compare them to photos from November 3)

December 5 - Another Thursday vet visit, and as you can see above, there is no tumor regrowth. The center area (darker) is not healthy yet, but at least it is not pushing out, growing. Dr. Scanlan assures me it the red raw area looks smaller than before, but to me (and comparing from photos) it looks the same as it did a month ago. She says the reddish pink ring outter ring is healthy skin, which was not there before. Again I tell Dr. Scanlan I'm worried its working too slowly, and will it spread in the meantime to other organs. She says with this type of cancer, while it is being treated, she would say the risk is small. But that sometimes with Cansema, the cancer will go away, come back, go away and come back. I think later that next time I must ask her how many cases she has treated, and how many went into long-term remission.

Hector had decided he doesn't like to eat raw food mixed in with his regular Felidae canned wet cat food, however he will eat sushi and baby food (with all his supplements mixed into it, though only can get a few into each feeding, but manage to get all the prescribed amounts into him each day). He has also decided that he wants to sleep on my pillow, on my side of the bed. Why do I get the feeling he knows he can get whatever he wants at this point???

December 6 - good news is that with the huge ecollar, he can't get out the dog door or jump up on things, so he has full access to the house and yard (I leave the door open for him) so he can enjoy the grass and sun! He spends the entire rest of the day sunbathing on the patio, purring and rolling around when I come over to check on him. I think he's also happy that this vet visit there was no reapplication! I 'tell' him keep fighting the cancer and he won't have to get it again.

December 12 - Vet checkup, everything looks good. Hector is doing well. Loves eating raw Shark and the other fish I get. Also feeding him Fancy Feast with the supplements instead of baby food, figuring the added nutrients may be better. Ask Dr. Scanlan about the other cats she's treated with cancer. Will include them on the chart (five of them).
