Treatment Diary: January 2003 to the present

A new year, a newly-revised supplement regime! The combination of these herbs and other nutritional supplements was carefully balanced by Dr. Scanlan for Hector specifically, please check with your vet if you are considering adding any of these to your pet's diet, as they can be toxic if not dosed correctly. There is a biography of Dr. Scanlan here on her own website.

Hector's New Daily Supplement Regime

Hoxsey

(D'Arcy Naturals - World Herbs for Pets brand) dry powder; 1/2 provided spoon per day. Ingredients: Oregon grape root, burdock root, red clover flowers, poke root, prickly ash bark, stillingia root, alfalfa leaf, cascara sagrada bark, licorice root.

Graviola

(Rain-Tree brand) 200 mg per day, i.e. 1/3 of the powder from inside the capsule. Ingredients: pure Graviola ground leaf and stem. (See also medical studies abstracts here and Graviola.org)
Glucosamine Sulfate 100 mg daily (powder from capsule)
Vitamin E 200 IU liquid, once daily (see weblinks)
Vitamin B complex 1ml (1 dropperful) twice daily (see benefits of B for cats)
Cod Liver Oil

1 capsule daily (Twinlab brand since its screened for toxic metals)

Raw food & canned 1/2 can of Felidae cat food in with 1/2 can's worth of frozen, prepared raw food (details below), twice daily. Also early evening 1/2 can Fancy Feast, one of the high protein, no by-product flavors, so that he'll eat the supplements.

Made several significant changes from original regime that Hector's been getting since October. Discontinued the Microhydrin, Colostrum and AnimalLife from Pat McKay. Continue feeding prepared raw food from Pat McKay, the "Bitch & Stud" variety which is extra finely ground, and of which he prefers the chicken and turkey. Stopped feeding supplemental raw fish, being worried about its content of thiamin which destroys vitamin B1. Gradually reduced the raw liver from two-fingers worth a day to half-a-thumb quantity a day, to avoid longterm Vitamin A overdose. Cod Liver Oil is high in Vitamin A & D, so along with the raw liver, need to dose carefully to avoid toxicity. Vitamin E is supposed to help to counteract this danger. See paper presented here.

At first I wondered, why Glucosamine? But I found out, "Glucosamine is rapidly taken up by cartilage cells and helps stimulate the synthesis of synovial fluid and cartilage and also helps inhibit the destructive enzymes that can destroy cartilage and proteoglycans. The anti-inflammatory aspect of glucosamine may result from the scavenging of harmful free radicals (similar to antioxidants)." source

January 7 - GREAT news! I can't quite believe it, but Hector's tumor, which if you remember had swollen back up to the point where I was asking everyone about amputation after our Dec 29th vet visit is totally flat and dried up!! Its not completely healed and there is still a hard, dark scab, but such an improvement!

Dr. Scanlan was very pleased, and I almost fainted when the bandage came off and it looked like it did. Hooray for Hector! I can't help but attribute the change at least in part to the addition of the Graviola to his supplements and switching from the omega combo to the pure cod liver oil. (I also did a whole bunch of feng shui cures for better health in the house just in case!) And maybe all the extra time I was able to spend giving him extra love over the holidays helped too?

The bandage Dr. Scanlan put on was too loose and was slipping down, so I took it off and re-wrapped it... and took some photos. Poor Hector's leg does look rather atrophied, plus the fur from being wrapped up all the time looks terrible. But if you scroll down, you'll see one of the rest of him, which is his true handsome self!
